Restoring A 1943 Willys MB Army Jeep.
A dedicated G503 Team will be doing the restoration and preservation of this flat fender WWII Military Jeep.
In this video series we will be disassembling this WWII Willys MB its the same for a Ford GPW, step by step, bolt by bolt. We will also be rebuilding this Willys MB Jeep back to its former glory just like it was back in 1943 at the Willys Overland assembly plant. Follow us along this journey, this pit falls, the parts to we prefer all done with simple tools in our small garage... This can be done by any home mechanic with the simplest of tools.

A long post - I was at a loose end when I wrote this and I'm about to retire, so you might get more - Sorry! Not sure about the new Filters. My filter had a long tapered spring for the original filter (Brass Disc). Paper disc being similar, which I am still using. When compressed the spring roughly fills the recess (Note) in the bottom of the shaft in the fuel bowl. The older disc filter was quite clever - it does not need a seal on the shaft at the bottom! Just needs a stout spring to keep the elements compressed. Ensure not too much play in top hole and as long as the first inch or so of the shaft (By top hole) and top edge of the bowl (inculding the two threads of course) are ok - the bowl is fine too use even if heavily pitted by rust - which after time it generally is! Was advised to fit a shorter spring (Note) for the modern filters to allow the filter to go down far enough to seal the bowl - this inturn allows the bottom seal on the new filters to pop over the aformentioned recess compromising the seal at the bottom which it definitely needs. If it doesn't, it's pretty close and the shaft needs to be in reasonably good condition here as well. The new filters I feel seem too long - I think they need to have a solid tube fixed down the centre! This at least would allow the filter not to rely on the inside condition of the bowl at least at the bottom - perhaps with some kind of seal for the shaft on or near the top to replicate the oringinal type filter! I hope this makes sense! I've got three diferent makes of these new filters including a baldwin one amd they all seem to be the same. The old style filters aren't readily avaiable now and over the years removing dammaged discs it's getting a bit short in the tooth. So need a usaable replacement. Going to look at getting them to act like the originals - Any comments! Slogan for today - Hey- My jeep's a green car - No kidding!
keep up the great work! couldnt do it without you.
I also live in Charleston, do you know of any Jeep meetups?
@@lowcountryjeeper we frequently attend cars and coffee in Mt. Pleasant on Saturdays in town center, and we try to make ale and octane on Daniel Island. That’s in the New Realm Brewery on Daniel Island. Last Sunday of Every month👍
@@TeamG503 sounds good, I’ll see if I can make it to the Mount pleasant cars and coffee soon. Would love to meet and talk Jeep. I am currently restoring a 1952 M38.
How do I remove an old freeze plug and insert a new one if my bell housing and motor are already installed in my jeep?
hello, do you know the tolerance of valve protrusion/retraction from the plane of the engine block?
with this gearbox, can it provide feedback to the steering wheel and to the driver when tires hit rocks or during off road?
These videos are sooooo helpful. Well presented as usual 🇨🇦🍻
What if the two center piston assemblies are frozen and you cannot turn the crank shaft to access the connecting rods?
@@markbarnard1399 soak the pistons with PB blaster or equivalent. A mix 50/50 with acetone and transmission fluid will do the trick also. Be patient, let it soak. Tap with a wood block and hammer.
Can you put a 12-volt bulb in these? My system has been converted
@@cjmj26 I would think that you might be able to. I believe there was some reproduction 12 volt bulbs make for these. Maybe check eBay. Thanks for the comment 👍
I really enjoy watching your channel and have just started building a 46 CJ2A. Thankyou so very much for your input. Brilliantly put together. Rod Florida.
@@kimthomas2271 thank you. Very much appreciated 👍🫡
Great videos! Have some questions: is the brake line for the M38 similar or are major differences? What is the thread size for the weel cylinders and is it stright or convex/concave? Also for the main cylinder. Thanks!
Just wondering can you install the rope seal without removing the engine and crank?
Scott, I owned a classic auto restoration business for several years. I always wanted a classic car that was built in the year that I was born. I hoped for a Duesenberg or an Auburn Speedster however the only vehicles built in 1943 were Tanks, Jeeps and half tracks. I now have two Willys 1943 MB Jeeps. We are all 80 years old now and some parts have been replaced, repaired worn out or missing. Showing signs of slowing down and some cosmetic repair is needed on all of us. The Jeeps have dents and I have wrinkles. We are still running but getting tired. The Jeeps will still be here long after I am gone. I am not as easy to restore as one of my Jeeps. I love my Jeeps.
Hey great video very helpful I have a 1942 g7107 that came from up north served on the Alaskan highway construction during the war so I'm in the middle of restoring it up in Alberta Canada just wondering what is the motor pool blue grey color you used so I keep it historically accurate I'd like to do the truck justice
Thank you. I'm doing a frame up restoration and half those parts were missing when I took it apart.
Hello Scott, I just wanted to say how much I enjoy your videos. I’ve only been watching your channel for about a year, I enjoy watching your attention to detail, it’s obvious to see the passion that you have for the hobby. I live in England and own a Hotchkiss M201 French Jeep and just wondered what you thought of them.? Keep up the good work, glad you don’t play music in the background because boy that spoils the videos.
Thank you for the kind words. I think the Hotchkiss vehicles are fantastic. I believe they used them in the Band Of Brothers Video Series. 👍🫡
Thank you guys
Great video instructions! Thanks 🙏
What carb do you recommend? I also have a Solex
I am a Detroiter, and you'd be amazed to learn that people actually do pronounce F-O-R-D incorrectly. Every time someone here says that work at Fords, I cringe about as much as when I hear people pronounce Willys as Willies.
Any issue reusing a gasket when replacing a carburetor?
Video bellissimo e come sempre dettagliato grazie!!!
Webewebbing makes top quality canvas. Made a summer top for my 47 Cj 2a with a mb front window. He’s the best out there.
Have you done the fine-tuning video for these Joe's Motor-pool Carter Carburetors?
Restoring a 45 MB , could not imagine not having the g503 to lean on , thanks guys
This guy is a godsend
As usual a neat very professional video! Thanks Scott !
Will rewiring the fuel gauge help with these problems. Moisture on the inside of lens when running. Will show full but drops to empty with fuel still in it. Wiggles back and forth very quickly.? Any one interested in a 46 CJ2A with military trailer. Lots of extra parts.? $15,000.
Superb well explained
You smacked that thumb hard... Thank you for the part numbers...
What the € for MA?
Great videos. Thanks 👍🇺🇸
I need a little advice on drive train for a 4.3 V6 swap on my 46 CJ2A
Perfeito 👍
I asked the local Jeep dealer how to pronounce the name, he said "Willies". I thought that would be proper if the man's name was Willy and the possessive Willy's. Otherwise, the "y" in Willys should be pronounced as the short "I", "Willis". Willis it is! Thanks!
Awesome! I just got a 48 CJ2-A, and plan to do something similar… Can you tell me what’s on the driver’s side fender?
That is a blackout driving light. They would not have been on a cj2A but on WWII G503 and other military jeeps.
Is there a risk of vapour lock having the front line so close to the block? I am new to this stuff. Just got my jeep
Lately came across your channel. I built my 43 40 yrs ago and drove it a lot till 15 yrs ago. It and Dads42 sat 15 yrs in a 40 ft container, You've helped a lot on reminding the things to do to revise them.
Thank you, I love having your videos as a resource...
What is the color code??
Looks like you took the grille off first.
How easy without a cab or bed on the truck, seriously...
CIAO TI SEGUO SEMPRE DOVE POSSO TROVARE LO STRUMENTO PER COMPRIMERE LE GUARNIZIONI?? GRAZIE
What kind of carburetor you use so it doesn’t touches the hood ?
I find that if I set the 2 manifolds together and tighten the joint real tight , then after this i put a straight edge from a set square along the mounting surface to check its completely even and flush all the way along, if its not I move the joint and re tighten , sometimes I have to sand down the face that goes against the block to get the 2 manifolds absolutely flush but I never tighten the joint between the 2 manifolds after the bolts against the block are tight because this can put one or other manifold under stress that will eventually cause a crack , done loads and seen what happens if you dont get the whole manifold tightened together before fitting it to the block
Question: Go to the 1 min 23 sec part of the vid. The schematic shows the red wire going to a center post and you install them on the bottom?? Where should it be?
Thank you! My 47 CJ2A brakes have never been right and now I know why. My mechanic adjusted them when I bought it and he obviously didn't know what he was doing. I have been very skeptical of letting my daughter drive it anywhere, but on flat ground. Now, I won't worry when she is home from law school and wants to take it for a spin!
I used the drawing on the Ford archive and made some very nice J bolts out of brass.
Nice
How do you clear fine particles in carburetor housing chambers that’s the most problematic.
